Trade Deadline: Real Winners and Losers

In the wake of the NHL trade deadline, there were countless articles chronicling the winners and losers, the buyers and sellers, the rentals, picks, and prospects. However, time gives clarity to all things and, one week later, I'd like to take a look at the the players and teams that have made an impact, and those who haven't.

JAROME IGINLA: Perhaps one of the biggest names moved at the deadline, Iginla (along with other acquisitions) was thought by many at the time to guarantee the Pens a Stanley Cup. But for whatever reason, injuries, new line mates, adjusting to a new system, Iginla has been relatively quiet with just 1goal and 1assist in the 5 games he's worn a new uniform. Undoubtedly this trade is still a win for the Pens, and Iggy playing with Geno Malkin and Chris Kunitz on the top line should eventually turn him around.

DEREK ROY: The Canucks didn't give up much to get Roy from Dallas (a 2nd round pick and defensive prospect Kevin Connauton), and have been so far happy with the results. Similar to Iginla, Roy hasn't produced as expected with just 1 assist in the 4 games he's played with the team, though he's looked dangerous. However, unlike Iginla, Roy was acquired not primarily for his scoring, but to bring balance to the lineup. He looked very comfortable playing on the third line with Jannik Hansen and the now injured Chris Higgins. It is to be determined however if the loss of Higgins will affect Roy down the stretch.

JAROMIR JAGR: The seemingly ageless and legendary Jagr hasn't missed a beat while playing for the Boston Bruins. 3 points in 3 games while playing primarily beside Gregory Campbell and Brad Marchand is great secondary production for the B's. After all the rage in Massachusetts after barely missing out on Iginla, at this point it looks like they may have gotten the better deal and, with Jagr on the roster, look to have increased their chances of going deep this year.

MARIAN GABORIK: Perhaps one of the biggest shockers of the deadline wasn't the New York Rangers dealing the sniper, but where he ended up. There must be something in the water in Columbus, because since becoming a Blue Jacket, Gaborik has been on fire. 5 points in 5 games after going 13 games with only 3 points to finish his tenure as a Ranger. Playing with old line mates and with the Jackets pushing hard for a playoff spot, look for Gaborik to continue at his pace.

BEN BISHOP: With all the talk about Roberto Luongo, Mikka Kiprusoff and Ryan Miller, Bishop ended up as the biggest name goalie switching teams on deadline day. The Senators were in a position where Bishop wasn't part of their future plans, and the Lighting were desperate for goal tending (as usual). Though Bishop was amazing in his first game with the Bolts, a 45 save shutout, he struggled in his next two games allowing 3 goals in each and losing both. He turned it around last night against Ottawa, picking up the win against his old team, however it won't be enough to help the Lightning reach the playoffs this year. This however was a deal for the future, and if GM Steve Yzerman can get him resigned, the future looks better than it did in Tampa.

MARTIN ERAT: The most mysterious deal that went down on deadline day was also a shocker. Erat going to the Washington Captials, and the Caps sending their top prospect, Filip Forsberg, to Nashville. Erat promptly did nothing for the Caps before getting injured. Unless Erat can get into some games and help the Caps in the playoffs, this trade now looks much, much worse than it did before. The writing's on the wall for GM George McPhee in Washington, and this deal may be one of his last if it doesn't work out.
