Morning Snapshots: 05/15

  • It was a tough game for the Ottawa Senators last night, dropping game one 4-1 in Pittsburgh, but the team now knows what it needs to do in order to get past the Penguins. First and foremost is improved play on special teams, Pittsburgh scored two power play goals and got a shorty from Pascal Dupuis. They need to stay out of the box, or the Pens will just keep feasting on them. The second is they have to find a way to get to the front of the net and create problems for Tomas Vokoun. Ottawa fired 36 shots on Vokoun, but few were of the dangerous variety and they didn't get to many rebounds. The teams now get a two day break before game two on Friday.
  • King's goalie Jonathan Quick was the star in the other game one last night, making 35 saves to record his sixth career playoff shutout. LA was opportunistic on their chances, picking up a goal from Slava Voynov and Mike Richards for a 2-0 win on only 20 shots. The Sharks weren't beaten as easily as the score indicates, however their speed and scoring was stopped by Quick at every turn. The Kings have now won five straight, and ten in a row at home. Game two is on Thursday.
  • The Dallas Stars have fired head coach Glen Gulutzan, new general manager Jim Nill announced on Tuesday. Gulutzan coached the Stars for two seasons, compiling a 64-57-9 record, but couldn't get the Stars into the playoffs. No replacement has been named yet.
  • Pens star Sidney Crosby, Wild goaltender Josh Harding and Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid are your 2013 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy nominees for perseverance and dedication to hockey.
  • It looks as though Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin is headed over to Finland to join team Russia ahead of the quarter-final round of the 2013 IIHF World Hockey Championships.
  • The quarter finals will take place on May 16th, the semis will be on May 18th, and the Gold/Bronze medal games will be on May 19th. Here's a look at the match-ups:

  • And also here's a look at the results so far. The only big moves were by Germany, who jumped up three spots from last year, and France, who fell four spots. Austria and Slovenia have been relegated to Division one for next year, while Italy and Kazakhstan will be promoted for the 2014 tournament held in Belarus.

That's all for now everybody, thanks for reading! I'll be back later with another playoff series preview, this time Detroit and Chicago. Please share and comment if you like the content here at WAAP, and don't forget to check out details for our header image contest on the tab up top. I know I haven't had any gifs up on the site for a while, and I plan to remedy that right now. I did a post recently about the most hated players in hockey, I wonder if anyone's opinions have changed after this hit by Raffi Torres last night. That dude just doesn't learn and may face supplemental discipline. Again.
