Poll Results: What's the best jersey in the NHL?

In the most recent poll here at WAAP, I asked you readers to tell me what your favorite jersey currently is in the NHL. The choices only covered a range of who I felt were the best jerseys, though there were few votes for others outside the selection. Here are the results.

1. Detroit Red Wings home red (59%) - It was a landslide victory for Detroit in this one, as most felt the winged wheel is the best jersey in hockey. It's hard to argue against that, as this wonderful design has remained virtually unchanged since 1932. The Red Wings have avoided the trend of alternate jerseys that started in the 1990's, and also avoided making anything but the most minor alterations when the new RBK Edge jerseys were introduced into the NHL during the 2007-08 season. Considering the team has won 11 Stanley Cups in this jersey, it's hard to argue for change. Simply a classic.

2. Boston Bruins alternate black (19%) - Though mostly known for the traditional spoked-B logo the Bruins have use for decades, Boston decided to take advantage of the new RBK jerseys to introduce an alternate logo. The logo, based off a design used in the 1930's was used as a shoulder patch on their regular home and away jerseys as well as the main logo on their new alternate jersey. With the usual black and gold as well as a modernized logo, this is probably the best alternate jersey in hockey at the moment.

3. Vancouver Canucks alternate blue (14%) -  The history of Canucks jerseys is long and often ridiculed. Vancouver had used three different main logos as well as no fewer than ten different color schemes in only 40 years. Like the Bruins, they also decided to add a throwback alternate jersey for the 2007-08 season, and there's no argument it's their best design so far. Using a modernized take on their inaugural 1970 jersey, they were able to introduce a jersey that finally looks sleek and stylish. In fact, many fans feel they should abandon the current orca logo and go with this one full-time.

4. Chicago Blackhawks home red (3%) - Though the famous native headdress logo has been in use since the teams inception, it wasn't until the 1955 season that Chicago adopted the solid red color scheme for it's (then) road jersey.  Since then the team has made very little changes and, like Detroit, has avoided the temptation to introduce an alternate logo. With a beautiful logo that is symbolic of hockey in Chicago, and a solid, aggressive red color, why would you?

5. Washington Capitals alternate white (1%) - From 1974 to 1995, the Capitals used a jersey that very closely resembled this current alternate jersey. Then from a period between 1995 and 2007 the used a hideous black/blue/gold color scheme with an odd eagle logo. Luckily, with the new RBK jersey, they realized their mistake and went back to the red, white and blue color scheme fitting of a team from America's capital. This alternate version of the new 2007 jersey wasn't introduced until 2011, but the throwback to the original jerseys was an instant hit with fans around the league.

As you can plainly see, NHL fans much prefer a modern take on classic looks over the newer and (supposedly) more marketable logo and themes that recent expansion teams have adopted. Surprisingly, there were no votes for original six teams such as Montreal or the New York Rangers, though those jerseys must surely be in the top ten. Thanks for reading everyone, and check out our special new poll up later today!
