Morning Snapshots 21/05

Via: cbc.ca

  • Two goals 31 seconds apart in the second period by Gustav Nyquist and Drew Miller were all that the Red Wings would need Monday night, as Detroit defeated Chicago 3-1. The Hawks pushed hard in the final frame and got a goal by Patrick Kane to cut the lead in half, but Pavel Datsyuk responded with a beautiful snipe for the insurance goal just over two minutes later. Jimmy Howard was great between the pipes for Detroit, stopping 16 of 17 in the third period and making 39 saves overall. The Wings have shown their resiliency and work effort so far against a more talented Chicago team, who now must win game 4 to take back home ice advantage and avoid going down three games to one.
  • There was a controversial incident during the third period, when the game was 2-1 it appeared the Hawks had scored to tie the game. However the goal was immediately waved off, as it was determined by the referee that Chicago forward Andrew Shaw had interfered with Howard. On video review it could be seen that, although Shaw was clearly in the crease, there was no contact with the goalie. However the goal was still disallowed, prompting an expected negative reaction from captain Jonathan Toews and coach Joel Quenneville after the game.
  • Although I think Toews should be more worried about his own scoring than his teammates. For all the Selke and Messier trophy nominee has done this year for the Hawks, he just can't find the back of the net in the playoffs. His goal scoring drought has now reached 9 games, stretching back to the 2012 post-season.
  • Some interesting news out of Denver, as it seems the Avalanche are close to announcing Patrick Roy as the team's new head coach. The Denver Post reported on it's website that Roy's brother Stephane posted the news through social media and then confirmed an announcement was imminent when contacted by the newspaper. Great news for Avs fans if true, as Roy has had great success as a coach in the QMJHL, winning the Memorial Cup. With Joe Sakic and Roy now running the team, it could also bring back many fans that have been lost since the glory days in Colorado.
  • During game between Montreal and Toronto way back in February, and incident occurred where it seemed that Leafs forward Mikhail Grabovski appeared to bite Habs forward Max Pacioretty. At the time members of the Leafs staunchly denied the accusation, but three months later Grabovski has admitted that he did indeed bite him. Likely there will be no repercussion from the league against Grabovski, but the man's integrity must surely take a big hit.
  •  Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist tried to clear the air about a potential shoulder injury he may have suffered against Boston, however he said nothing to reassure fans. Lundqvist fell awkwardly onto his shoulder while making a save in game two, and may now be playing through an injury. For those wondering, the back up in New York is Martin Biron, who only made 6 appearances this season.
  • Speaking of playing through injury, Ducks defenseman Francois Beauchemin had undergone successful surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right knee. Beauchemin played the last month, including Anaheim's first round series against Detroit, with this injury.
  • And finally, a small signing of a very big player to announce, as John Scott has resigned with the Buffalo Sabres for another year. The 6-foot-8, 270 pound enforcer has one career goal in 180 games.
That's all for now, thanks for reading everyone. Please comment and share if you like the content here at WAAP, let's get this blog going! Your gif today is brought to you by Nyquist's beautiful goal last night to open the scoring for Detroit. Beautiful move to get by Brent Seabrook, and then the patience to out wait goalie Corey Crawford and bury it is what makes this one so nifty.
