Morning Snapshots: Kessel Scores, Quick, Holtby, Hiller Get Shutouts + More

Via: cbssports.com

  • Leaf's winger Phil Kessel was the hero in Boston, scoring the game winning goal on a breakaway less than a minute into the third period. It was the first five on five goal for Kessel against the Bruins since he was traded by them to Toronto. Jofferey Lupul added two goals for the Leafs. It was a rough game two for the Bruins, who gave up multiple odd man breaks against and had difficulty executing on both sides of the puck. Though Boston outshot the Leafs, James Reimer stood tall with 39 saves for his first career post-season victory. The series is now tied 1-1, heading back to Toronto.
  • It was a goalie battle in Washington as both Braden Holtby and New York's Henrik Lundqvist went toe to toe all night. Lundvist in particular made some amazing stops, finishing with 38 saves, but was beat by Mike Green in overtime as the Rangers fell 1-0. It was particularly frustrating for New York as the goal came on a power play thanks to Ryan McDonaugh shooting the puck over the glass in his own zone. Holtby, with 24 saves, got his first career playoff shutout. The Rangers have now scored only one goal in the series, which he Captials lead 2-0.
  • For the second consecutive game the Detroit Red Wings fell apart in the third period, allowing three goals. This time however they had no lead to fall back on and lost the game 4-0 to Anaheim. The turning point came midway through the final frame when Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf stripped Damian Brunner of the puck and scored a shorthanded goal to put Anaheim up by two. Detroit was dominated on special teams, going 0-6 on the powerplay while allowing two pp goals and the Getzlaf shorty. Jonas Hiller needed to make only 23 saves to get the shutout for Anaheim. The Ducks now hold a 2-1 series lead.
  • Another potentially suspendable incident occurred during this game, when Detroit's Justin Abdelkader left his feet to deliver a check to Duck's defenseman Toni Lydman. Abdelkader made contact with Lydman's head and was given a 5 minute major for charging as well as a game misconduct. Lydman wasn't able to finish the game. Expect Brendan Shanahan to take a look at this one.
  • Jonathan Quick blamed himself for the Kings losing the first two games against the Blues and vowed to be better in game three. He was, picking up 30 saves for his 5th career shutout in a 1-0 victory that pulled the Kings back into the series. Slava Voynov scored the only goal the Kings would need early in the second period on a mad scramble in front of the St. Louis goal. The Blues pushed hard to tie the game in the third, outshooting the Kings 10-2, but couldn't get one past Quick. The series now stands at 2-1 in favor of St. Louis.
  • And finally, here's your updates from day two of the IIHF World Championships: USA got past Austria 5-3, Norway defeated Slovenia 3-1, Russia dominated Latvia 6-0, Canada beat Denmark   3-1, Finland shutout the Slovaks 2-0 and Sweden edged the Czech Republic 2-1.
